This 6-month-old Baby Needs A Liver Transplant in 2 Weeks

“There were days I just kept staring at his eyes, I could sense an innocence in his pain. I don’t have any big dreams, but there is one, I want to see my son’s little feet running in joy.”

Saketh is 6 months old. He is the son of a couple struggling to survive in the rigmarole of poverty and ill fate. After he was born, their joy doubled as did their responsibilities. Although these parents did everything they could for their baby boy, life hit them hard by giving their baby boy a chronic liver disease.

Our baby's life is in danger

Saketh fell ill and the parents thought it was normal in infancy. They gave him home remedies and when that did not work, the family was worried. A local doctor diagnosed him with jaundice. When the drugs did not work, Mahesh’s mother suspected that Saketh was suffering from something unknown to them but clearly not jaundice.

At first, the family visited a General Doctor, but the doctor himself did not know what was going inside Saketh’s body, so he referred them to Nilaufer Hospital, Hyderabad. The doctors at Nilaufer hospital suspected that Saketh had a liver failure he had a biopsy to confirm the same.

"We were heart-broken to know that our baby boy had liver failure. He cannot even speak and tell us if something is hurting him. His stomach had bloated. He was yellow. He was not eating. Even now, he cries so much, and that is how we know that he is in pain. They treated him with medicines, and as time went by his condition just got worse. We went to Dr Prashant Bachina, MBBS, MD, Hepatologist and Liver Transplant Physician in Rainbow Hospital."

A downtrodden family trying to make ends meet

Mahesh and his family reside in a ramshackle located on the outskirts of Hyderabad, and after his father passed away, the whole family solely depends upon Mahesh’s income which comes through a small mobile repair stall. Even though the circumstances are filled with turmoil and misfortune, Mahesh supported the family to exist in this tiring world.

"I’ve never expected something like this would happen to my child, sometimes I feel this was all my fault because I brought Saketh into this world. "

A life-threatening conundrum with a deadline

After the precise diagnosis, the doctor confirmed that Saketh has a chronic liver failure which means on the positive side the chances of survival are high, but the transplantation must happen without delay. Since then, Mahesh had been in painful perplexity. His thoughts were haunted by a question “Where will I get the money from?” Saketh has a chronic liver failure which means on the positive side the chances of survival are high, but the transplantation must happen without delay.  “When Saketh’s case came to me, he was already in a dreadful state and the infection had affected major part of the liver. If I was given the power, firstly, I will educate the doctors because the general paediatricians are peripheral, they don’t have much awareness about these procedures.” - Dr. Bachina

2 months to save him

Since Saketh's condition is extremely critical a liver transplant is the only prognosis. He needs a surgery within the next 2 months to survive this situation. "There is no time at all, there will be certain death to the patient if the liver isn’t transplanted. Considering the best case scenario Saketh may survive upto 2 months.

The health card does not support liver surgeries

After Saketh’s problem was clear to the family, they first approached the Government’s aid camp; unfortunately, nothing went their way, their health card did not accept the liver surgeries.

“I tried everything, I asked my friends, relatives and almost everyone whom I knew, finally some money was collected for the hospital expenses, but that wasn’t sufficient. It was Dr Prashant who told me about crowdfunding and that’s when my hopes did not fall.”

What can you do for Saketh?

Although Saketh is just an infant, he is going through something that would be a nightmare for even an adult. Your contribution can save his life and give him a future.
